Newswise — Reston, Va.; December 4, 2017 — The Society of Toxicology (SOT), a professional membership association of more than 8,200 scientists worldwide, has approved a new Issue Statement on food and feed safety related to genetically engineered (GE) crops (commonly referred to as GMOs).

While data from scientific studies have demonstrated that foods obtained from GE crops are as safe and nutritious as foods obtained from conventional crops, there is consumer concern abut the safety of these products. The SOT Issue Statement provides a brief overview of the research processes and principles used to assess the safety of GE crops.

The approval of the SOT Issue Statement “Food and Feed Safety of Genetically Engineered Food Crops” coincides with the advanced access publication today of a new forum article on the same subject in the Society’s official journal, Toxicological Sciences. Sharing a title with the SOT Issue Statement, the forum article provides an in-depth review of 20+ years of GE research.

SOT Issue Statements are intended to offer brief, balanced presentations of the science and related issues underlying an area of relevance to SOT and toxicology.
