ST. JOHN'S UNIVERSITY RECEIVES $10 MILLION DONATIONSecond Christmas in a row St. John's receives eight-figure gift

Jamaica, NY (December 19, 2000) -- Just in time for Christmas, St. John's University proudly announced a gift in the amount of $10 million by Thomas E. McInerney ('64UC), his wife, Paula, and the McInerney family. Mr. McInerney is General Partner in Welsh, Carson, Anderson & Stowe (WCAS) and a member of the St. John's University Board of Trustees. This is the second Christmas in a row St. John's has received a gift of this size.

"We can think of no better way of giving back to St. John's," said Mr. McInerney. "I have been blessed in many ways in my life, but have never forgotten the University and the people who contributed to that success. My wife Paula and I are deeply grateful to St. John's. This gift is illustrative of how proud we are to be associated with the St. John's mission, and to be part of where the University is going in this new millennium."

Rev. Donald J. Harrington, C.M., President of St. John's University, said, "Once again, Christmas has arrived early at St. John's, and we are deeply thankful to Tom, Paula and the McInerney family for their extraordinary gift. Tom has long demonstrated the Vincentian mission of service to others. As a member of our Board of Trustees, he has played a vital role in charting the growth and expansion of St. John's. Mr. McInerney has had a highly successful career in the fields of information and investment services. He has been a General Partner in Welsh, Carson, Anderson & Stowe (WCAS), a New York investment firm specializing in the information services and health care industries, since 1986. Prior to that, he was President and Chief Executive Officer of Dama Telecommunications, which he co-founded, from 1982 to 1986. He has also been a Group Vice President, Financial Services for Automatic Data Processing, Inc. (1972-82), an operations executive at the American Stock Exchange (1966-72), and held positions at Citibank and American Airlines. Mr. McInerney is a director of eight other corporations and organizations.

Mr. McInerney is active with the Cardinal's Appeal and the Inner City Scholarship fund. A graduate of St. John's University, Mr. McInerney and his wife, Paula, are members of the Loughlin Society and live in Manhattan.

Founded in 1870 by the Vincentian community, St. John's University has six schools and colleges. It offers associate, baccalaureate, master's, doctoral and professional degrees. The University enjoys an enrollment of approximately 18,600 students and operates four campuses: in Queens, Staten Island and Eastern Long Island in New York and in Rome, Italy.
