Newswise — In the spirit of National Nurses’ Week, students at Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing (JHUSON) again worked together to acknowledge the important contributions to care being made by nurses serving in Iraq and Afghanistan with the U.S. armed forces.

Continuing a “tradition” begun in 2011, the JHUSON’s National Student Nurses’ Association (NSNA) assembled care packages with items including recent nursing journals, personal letters and cards, toiletries, easy-to-carry snacks, and popular magazines. The items were purchased with over $500 in donations from friends and family of current students, alumni, and faculty. Several items also were donated by faculty and students at JHUSON.

This year, the NSNA will ship the packages to nurses at six overseas sites on May 10. Addresses were provided by the Army Nurse Corps, U.S. Air Force nurses, Air National Guard nurses, and JHUSON alumni.

“People responded well to our effort, most acknowledging the great sacrifices that military nurses make in caring for our troops,” noted Hopkins NSNA chapter president Felicia Rockko, Trad. ’12. “We are happy to provide these comfort items to our fellow nurses overseas to demonstrate our appreciation and support!”

Nurses’ Week, sponsored by the American Nursing Association, is an annual event designed to raise awareness of the value of nursing and to recognize the important contributions nurses make to healthcare. It begins each year on May 6 and ends on May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, who is considered to be the founder of modern nursing.
