Article title: Ex vivo use of cell-permeable succinate prodrug attenuates mitochondrial dysfunction in blood cells obtained from carbon monoxide poisoned individuals

Authors: Shawn Owiredu, Abhay Ranganathan, David M. Eckmann, Frances S. Shofer, Kevin Hardy, David S. Lambert, Matthew Kelly, David H. Jang

From the authors: "In this study, the use of a first generation succinate prodrug whose intracellular cleavage provides additional succinate in [peripheral blood mononuclear cells] obtained from subjects with confirmed [carbon monoxide] poisoning demonstrated an overall increase in respiration with increased uncoupled [Complex II] respiration which also resulted in increased [Complex IV] respiration."
