The ASN Foundation for Kidney Research Endows Five Career Development Grants

Newswise — Washington, DC (October 16, 2018)—In 2016, the ASN Foundation for Kidney Research launched the Securing the Future Campaign with the goal to endow the Career Development Grants Program. The campaign has since raised more than $22 million through generous contributions from industry, individual donors, and the American Society of Nephrology (ASN).

Due to these efforts, the foundation is pleased to announce that five Career Development Grants have been endowed in 2018:

  • One Joseph V. Bonventre Career Development Grant

This grant, endowed by Keryx Biopharmaceuticals, Inc., and ASN, honors former ASN President Joseph V. Bonventre, MD, PhD, FASN, for his work in kidney cellular injury and repair mechanisms. The two-year grant is awarded every other year in any area of nephrology research.

  • Two Carl W. Gottschalk Research Scholar Grants

ASN honors the pioneering kidney researcher and former ASN President Carl W. Gottschalk, MD, with two new and two continuing grants annually. These grants will be awarded in any area of nephrology research.

  • One John Merrill Grant in Transplantation

This grant is named for John P. Merrill, MD, who led the first successful kidney transplant. The grant will be available annually in support of investigators performing biomedical research related to transplantation.

  • One Norman Siegel Research Scholar Grant in Pediatrics

Former ASN president Norman J. Siegel, MD, FASN, is widely acknowledged as one of the foremost pediatric nephrologists. The grant, available annually, supports researchers in pediatric nephrology.

Through endowing these five grants, the ASN Foundation and its contributors (from industry, individuals, and ASN) are building on the achievements of these outstanding leaders by ensuring future funding for early career investigators conducting groundbreaking research.
