Newswise — Schaumburg, Ill, August 23, 2018 — The Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS) proudly announces the winners of the 2nd Annual Paper of the Year awards, honoring the most impactful papers published in Neurosurgery from July 2017 to June 2018 in select subspecialties. Winners submitted papers that challenged dogma, created a paradigm shift, and inspired neurosurgeons to rethink their approaches to patient care, big data, and trial results.
The Paper of the Year awards highlight the collaboration between the CNS and Neurosurgery by calling special attention to the best original science published over the past 12 months at the CNS’s largest platform, the 2018 CNS Annual Meeting, held in Houston, Texas, October 6–10.
The Cerebrovascular Paper of the Year was awarded to “Circumferential Wall Enhancement on Magnetic Resonance Imaging is Useful to Identify Rupture Site in Patients with Multiple Cerebral Aneurysms” Authors include: Shunsuke Omodaka, MD, PhD; Hidenori Endo, MD, PhD; Kuniyasu Niizuma, MD, PhD; Miki Fujimura, MD, PhD; Toshiki Endo, MD, PhD; Kenichi Sato, MD, PhD; Shin-ichiro Sugiyama, MD, PhD; Takashi Inoue, MD, PhD; and Teiji Tominaga, MD, PhD. The paper was originally published in the May 2018 issue of Neurosurgery. Author Hidenori Endo, MD, of the Department of Neurosurgery at Tohoku University Hospital, will be recognized on the main stage during the meeting’s General Scientific Session.
The Neurotrauma and Critical Care Paper of the Year was awarded to “Motor Evoked Potentials Correlate with Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Early Recovery after Acute Spinal Cord Injury” Authors include: Sanjay S. Dhall, MD; Jenny Haefeli, PhD; Jason F. Talbott, MD, PhD; Adam R. Ferguson, PhD; William J. Readdy, BS; Jacqueline C. Bresnahan, PhD; Michael S. Beattie, PhD; Jonathan Z. Pan, MD, PhD; Geoffrey T. Manley, MD, PhD; and William D. Whetstone, MD. The paper was originally published in the June 2018 issue of Neurosurgery. Author Sanjay Dhall, MD, of the University of California, San Francisco, Department of Neurological Surgery, will be recognized on the main stage during the meeting’s General Scientific Session.
The Pediatrics Paper of the Year was awarded to “Pineoblastoma—The Experience at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.” Authors include: Kara A. Parikh, BSc; Garrett T. Venable, MD; Brent A. Orr, MD, PhD; Asim F. Choudhri, MD; Frederick A. Boop, MD; Amar J. Gajjar, MD; and Paul Klimo Jr., MD. The paper was originally published in the July 2017 issue of Neurosurgery. Author Paul Klimo Jr., MD, of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, will be recognized on the main stage during the meeting’s General Scientific Session.
The Socioeconomics, Health Policy, and Law Paper of the Year was awarded to “Reducing Surgical Infections and Implant Costs via a Novel Paradigm of Enhanced Physician Awareness.” Authors include: Nitin Agarwal, MD; Prateek Agarwal, AB; Ashley Querry, BS; Anna Mazurkiewicz, BS; Brittany Whiteside, BS; Oscar C. Marroquin, MD; Stephen F. Koscumb, BS; Daniel A. Wecht, MD, MS; and Robert M. Friedlander, MD, MA. The paper was originally published in the May 2018 issue of Neurosurgery. Author Nitin Agarwal, MD, of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Department of Neurological Surgery, will be recognized on the main stage during the meeting’s General Scientific Session.
The Stereotactic and Functional Paper of the Year was awarded to “Granger Causality Analysis of Interictal iEEG Predicts Seizure Focus and Ultimate Resection.” Authors include: Eun-Hyoung Park, PhD, and Joseph R. Madsen, MD. The paper was originally published in the January 2018 issue of Neurosurgery. Author Joseph R. Madsen, MD, of the Boston Children’s Hospital, will be recognized on the main stage during the meeting’s General Scientific Session.
The Tumor Paper of the Year was awarded to “Factors Associated With Pre- and Postoperative Seizures in 1033 Patients Undergoing Supratentorial Meningioma Resection.” Authors include: William C. Chen, BS; Stephen T. Magill, MD, PhD; Dario J. Englot, MD, PhD; Joe D. Baal, BS; Sagar Wagle, BS; Jonathan W. Rick, BS; and Michael W. McDermott, MD. The paper was originally published in the August 2017 issue of Neurosurgery. Author Stephen T. Magill MD, PhD, of the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of California, San Francisco, will be recognized on the main stage during the meeting’s General Scientific Session.
The papers were subjected to an intense review process, beginning with initial selection from the pool of eligible papers published over the last year. The appropriate Neurosurgery section editors and Pain section representatives each presented a list of their top five for further consideration. NEUROSURGERY® Publications Editor-in-Chief Nelson M. Oyesiku, MD, PhD, FACS, Neurosurgery Peripheral Nerve Section Editor, Rajiv Midha, MSc, MD, Neurosurgery Spine Section Editor John E. O’Toole, MD, MS, the appropriate Neurosurgery Section Editor, and the appropriate section representative to the Scientific Program Committee then reviewed the top five selections, and from there selected the Paper of the Year section level winner. Dr. O'Toole and Dr. Midha then selected the Top Paper of the Year from amongst the section winners, with Dr. Oyesiku reserving his vote in the event a tie-breaker was needed.

Authors will also give oral presentations about their work in the CNS Xperience Lounge. These presentations will allow for audience questions and direct discussion.
