Newswise — CHICAGO – Jan. 6, 2021 – The Association of Diabetes Care & Education Specialists journal The Diabetes Educator is changing its name to The Science of Diabetes Self-Management and Care effective February 2021. The journal will move to online-only publication for ADCES members starting with the February issue. The changes reflect the update to the specialty title by ADCES and the Certification Board for Diabetes Care and Education in January 2020, from diabetes educator to diabetes care and education specialist, as well as larger goals from the association to expand the journal’s editorial scope and audience.

"The renaming of the journal provides a great opportunity to encompass the dimension of evidence-based research needed to shape our future and the role diabetes care and education specialists play in the larger diabetes care team," said Editor-in-Chief James Fain, Ph.D., RN, BC-ADM, FADCES, FAAN.

The name change was based on several criteria including a strengthened focus on science from within the field, that it should not be linked to one specific role or tied solely to the concept of education, and the need to include the word diabetes to retain the voice of ADCES and person-centered perspectives.

According to Sage Publishing, the move to online publication is in response to a broader trend in scholarly journals to move to a primarily digital format.

The publication will be distributed to members via email and available at tde.sagepub.com.
