Newswise — (New York, NY – July 28, 2020)  -  The Mount Sinai Hospital, the flagship hospital of Mount Sinai Health System, was listed among the nation’s top hospitals for care excellence in U.S. News and World Report, marking the fifth straight year the hospital has been listed among the top 20 in the country while landing on the distinctive “Honor Roll” list.

In this year’s report, Mount Sinai’s Brookdale Department of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine earned the No. 1 spot in the nation in geriatrics and among the nation’s elite hospitals in five specialties: Cardiology/Heart Surgery (No. 6); Gastroenterology/GI Surgery (No. 9); Diabetes/Endocrinology (No. 11); Nephrology (No. 12); and Neurology/Neurosurgery (No. 12). New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai, America’s oldest specialty hospital—celebrating its 200th anniversary this year and one of the world’s leading facilities for the treatment of diseases of the eyes, ears, nose, and throat — was nationally ranked in Ophthalmology at No. 11.

“These rankings are a testament to the extraordinary dedication to science and innovation and the highest-level patient care and safety that defines The Mount Sinai Hospital. I could not be prouder of our compassionate team of physicians, nurses, and support staff who have shined brilliantly during this pandemic as it relentlessly tests our strength and resilience. They have worked tirelessly to ensure the safety of every patient at every step of their journey to greater health,” said Kenneth L. Davis, President and Chief Executive Officer, Mount Sinai Health System.

“In our groundbreaking research and scientific discoveries, we are transforming the way human diseases are diagnosed and treated, while training the next generation of health care leaders,” said Dennis S. Charney, MD, Anne and Joel Ehrenkranz Dean, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and President for Academic Affairs, Mount Sinai Health System. “We tip our hats to our extraordinary and forward-looking faculty and to the many specialties recognized in the top 20 rankings, including the Brookdale Department of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine, which has regained its No. 1 ranking by providing the highest-quality care through age-friendly services that are both imaginative and clinically excellent. While developing innovative models of care for our rapidly aging population, the Brookdale Department of Geriatrics trains 1 in every 10 geriatricians, many of whom are leaders in their field.”

“For the fifth straight year, US News and World Report has ranked The Mount Sinai Hospital among the most elite hospitals in our nation.  Now, more than ever, in light of the profound strain of the Covid pandemic, this outstanding recognition is even more meaningful for our talented and compassionate front line care providers,” David L. Reich, MD, President and Chief Operating Officer of The Mount Sinai Hospital and the Horace W. Goldsmith Professor of Anesthesiology at the Icahn School of Medicine.

“It has been a privilege and an honor to lead the Brookdale Department of Geriatrics at Mount Sinai. I am deeply proud of our outstanding team of clinicians who provide the highest level of care while constantly innovating age-friendly models such as improvements to telehealth, scaling up of our Hospital at Home program, inventing a palliative care hotline overnight to address the pandemic and its effects, and teaching future leaders and clinicians. I applaud my team for being modern, forward-thinking, and technologically smart while never overlooking the value and resonance of a simple phone call,” said R. Sean Morrison, MD, the Ellen and Howard C. Katz Professor and Chair for the Brookdale Department of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine at Mount Sinai.

The Best Hospitals rankings help guide patients who need a high level of care or who have a challenging condition or extra risk because of age or multiple health problems. Criteria such as patient survival and safety data, adequacy of nurse staffing levels, and other measures largely determine the rankings in most specialties.
