CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Feb. 11, 2013 — The Rev. Gerald P. Fogarty, S.J., William R. Kenan Jr. Professor of Religious Studies and History at the University of Virginia, is available to speak with members of the media about issues of papal succession.
Fogarty has a joint appointment to the Department of Religious Studies and to the Corcoran Department of History in the College of Arts & Sciences. He specializes in American Catholic history, Vatican-American relations, the history of Catholic theology since the French Revolution and the history of Vatican II.
He received a bachelor of arts from Fordham University, and master of philosophy and doctor of philosophy degrees from Yale University. He received an honorary doctorate in religious studies from Marquette University in 2001.
He is on the Board of Advisers on Church History, Concilium, Revue internationale de théologie, Nijmegen, Holland since 1994; was one of three Vatican appointees to Vatican-Jewish committee on the Vatican and World War II from 1999 to 2001 and is a member of the board of trustees for Scranton University. He is a former president of the American Catholic Historical Association, as well as a member of its executive council and archivist of the Maryland Province of the Society of Jesus.
Fogarty is a member of the American Society of Church History, the American Historical Association, the United States Catholic Historical Society, the Catholic Commission on Intellectual and Cultural Affairs and the Catholic Theological Society of America.
