There's an Artist in Everyone

Many people don't consider themselves creative, but that's a misconception, says Gary Chapman, MFA, of the UAB Department of Art and Art History. Chapman says that up to fifth or sixth grade we love exploring our artistic side.

In general, we are less concerned with what our drawing looks like and more interested in what it represents. "What usually happens is around this age kids begin to realize that what they are drawing doesn't look realistic, and they become somewhat inhibited about their abilities. Now art theory is centering on getting back to that free-association period and recognizing that much of children's art is really quite good."
