Newswise — On June 24, Trump signed an executive order to make health care pricing more transparent. University of Utah Health has an interactive online price transparency tool that estimates out-of-pocket costs and has been in operation for nearly three years. Already, the tool has processed more than 40,000 estimates with some of the top requested services being labor and delivery, radiology MRI/CT and encdoscopies.
Earlier this year, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) administrator Seema Verma recognized U of U Health’s work in this area.
Two experts are available to comment on the cost estimate tool and lessons learned since its rollout.
Kathy Delis is administrative director for Revenue Cycle Support Services at U of U Health. She can describe developing the tool, improvements made, how often the tool is being used and how people are using it.
Yoshimi Anzai, MD, MPH, Associate Chief Medical Quality Officer at U of U Health has a goal of connecting the costs of delivering care with quality and outcomes. She is investigating whether the price transparency tool influences the decision to undergo a procedure and how the tool influences health care costs.
