Newswise — Perimeter Institute is pleased to announce the appointment of two new Faculty members, Dr. Natalia Toro and Dr. Philip Schuster, to its research team. Both will join the institute in September 2010. In making the announcement, Institute Director Neil Turok said, "Natalia and Philip are two of the brightest young stars in particle physics. We are delighted they are bringing their expertise in LHC physics and dark matter searches to Perimeter."

Natalia Toro will join PI as a junior faculty member in the Particle Physics program. She completed her PhD in 2007 at Harvard University under the supervision of Prof. Nima Arkani-Hamed, a Distinguished Research Chair at Perimeter Institute, and is completing a postdoc at Stanford University SITP.

Philip Schuster will join PI as a junior faculty member in the Particle Physics program. Dr. Schuster completed his PhD in 2007 at Harvard University under the supervision of Prof. Nima Arkani-Hamed and has since been a Research Associate at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory.

Both Schuster and Toro are theorists with close links to experiment. In the past few years, they played a major role in integrating new techniques, called "on-shell effective theories," into the program of upcoming searches at the Compact Muon Solenoid experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. They were also central in developing a new experiment, which will run in June 2010 at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility, searching for evidence of "dark forces." Schuster and Toro are also highly capable theorists with broad interests and have, for example, co-authored a paper on recursion relations used to define higher-point scattering amplitudes in Yang-Mills theories and gravity in terms of lower-point amplitudes.
