Newswise — Baltimore, MD – U.S. News & World Report ranked Sinai Hospital of Baltimore as one of the country’s best hospitals in neurology and neurosurgery (#36 in the top 50) as well as “high performing” in four other medical specialties for 2016-2017. The annual rankings recognize hospitals that “excel in treating exceedingly difficult cases…and perform best in specific areas of care,” according to the magazine.

U.S. News also recognized Sinai as one of the state’s top hospitals, tied for number three in both Maryland and the Baltimore metro region.

“Sinai Hospital is honored to be ranked among Maryland’s best, which is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our employees to fulfill our mission to improve the health of people in our communities,” says Amy Perry, president of Sinai Hospital and executive vice president of LifeBridge Health.

Sinai’s Departments of Neurology and Neurosurgery, part of the Sandra and Malcolm Berman Brain & Spine Institute, ranked in the top 50 out of nearly 5,000 hospitals surveyed this year.

“This prestigious recognition for the Sandra and Malcolm Berman Brain & Spine Institute reflects the top-notch expertise and care provided by our neurology and neurosurgery teams. They are truly among the best in the nation with a commitment to excellence in treating complex injuries and disorders of the brain, spine and nervous system. Led by neurologist Dr. Adrian Goldszmidt and neurosurgeon Dr. Neal Naff, their cutting-edge work has changed the lives of countless patients,” adds Perry.

U.S. News & World Report’s Best Hospitals ranks hospitals in 16 individual specialty areas. Sinai Hospital also achieved U.S. News recognition as “high performing” in cancer, gastroenterology and GI surgery, geriatrics and nephrology.

The magazine also rates hospitals on “common adult procedures and conditions.” In these categories, Sinai Hospital rated as “high performing” in heart failure, colon cancer surgery and COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease).

Perry adds, “This year, we are commemorating Sinai Hospital’s 150th anniversary, marking a century-and-a-half of caring for people from Baltimore and beyond. As we celebrate this milestone, as well as the recognitions from U.S. News & World Report, we will continue to strive to help people and improve health, combining innovation and compassionate care with a commitment to our communities.”

U.S. News says the Best Hospitals rankings, now in their 27th year, “help guide patients to hospitals that deliver outstanding care across 25 specialties, procedures and conditions.” The magazine uses a complex methodology to evaluate the hospitals, looking at measures ranging from patient survival and infection rates to nurse staffing and more.
