Newswise — PinnacleHealth is one of seven hospitals in the state and 63 nationally that earned high performing recognition in U.S. News & World Report's "Best Hospitals" 2016-2017 publication, released today. In regional rankings, PinnacleHealth is ranked No.11 in Pennsylvania. Best Hospitals for procedures and conditions rates overall quality of inpatient care in the kinds of procedures and conditions that many hospitals commonly encounter. “This recognition demonstrates that PinnacleHealth offers exactly what our community is looking for: the best clinical outcomes in the state,” said Michael A. Young, president and CEO, PinnacleHealth. “We offer cutting-edge technology, yet we’re a high-value provider. We recognize our responsibility to businesses and the community, so we keep our quality high and work hard to keep healthcare costs as low as possible, which benefits everyone.” U.S. News evaluated the performance of more than 4,500 hospitals in nine inpatient surgical procedures and chronic conditions: colon cancer surgery, lung cancer surgery, heart bypass surgery, aortic valve surgery, abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, hip replacement, knee replacement, heart failure and COPD. The results: 1,628 earned at least one “high performing,” the top rating. But only these 63 swept the table, with high performing ratings in all nine types of care. “PinnacleHealth focuses on delivering the right care at the right time, in part by working with our chronic disease team to keep patients’ conditions from escalating to the need for emergency care,” said Young. “We offer leading national outcomes right here in Harrisburg, and recent data show that our utilization and cost is the lowest in one insurer’s network. Being fiscally responsible and keeping people well help to keep our community strong.” An overall rating of high performing indicates a hospital was significantly better than the national average in a given procedure or condition. “We continue to be honored by the recognition given to us and our dedicated team by U.S. News,” said Nirmal Joshi, chief medical officer, PinnacleHealth. “These ratings have a role to play in helping consumers make more-informed choices among the hospitals in their communities. We are thankful that our skilled and compassionate caregivers have been recognized for their high-quality, safe care.” This is the second year in which PinnacleHealth was recognized for five of these conditions. In 2015’s the Best Hospitals procedures and conditions ratings—previously Best Hospitals for Common Care—PinnacleHealth was one of 34 in the nation and the only Pennsylvania hospital rated high performing in all conditions and procedures evaluated at the time: hip replacement, knee replacement, heart bypass surgery, congestive heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The Best Hospitals procedure and condition ratings focus on individual procedures and conditions rather than on broader specialties. The goal is to evaluate how well hospitals perform in each procedure or condition and not just with the most difficult cases, as with the specialty rankings, but with the full range of patients.
