Newswise — As the San Diego Seals open their inaugural season, the professional box lacrosse team has selected UC San Diego Health, the region’s only academic health system, as its Official Health Care Provider.

On-site medical care for all athletes at Seals training camps and home games is led by UC San Diego Health’s David E.J. Bazzo, MD, primary care physician/sports medicine specialist and head team physician; Catherine M. Robertson, MD, chief of Sports Medicine, associate team physician and lead orthopedic surgeon; Bryan T. Leek, MD, orthopedic surgeon and associate team physician; and Kenneth S. Taylor, MD, primary care physician/sports medicine specialist and associate team physician; with the support of a massage therapist and nutritionist.

“We’re excited to partner with the Seals as they bring professional indoor lacrosse to our region,” Bazzo said. “The sport is known for being fast and physical and we look forward to applying our own team approach to help keep these players in top shape.”

Through this partnership, Seals athletes have access to advanced sports medicine and orthopedics care, including emerging surgical techniques and imaging and diagnostic tools. The team also benefits from UC San Diego Health’s expertise in family medicine, nutrition education and massage therapy. UC San Diego Health and the Seals will collaborate on outreach and awareness efforts to promote fitness and healthy living in the local community.

“It is a great honor to be associated with the premier brand in health care in San Diego County,” said Steve Govett, San Diego Seals president. “The Seals are proud to partner with UC San Diego Health, who are leaders in community outreach, groundbreaking research and inspired teaching.”

In addition to this partnership with the Seals, UC San Diego Health is the Official Health Care Provider for the San Diego Padres, Regional Medical Center for the U.S. Olympic Committee, and provides medical care for UC San Diego Athletics, the San Diego Sockers and many other local teams, schools and community events.
