UNH IS SITE OF SATELLITE TELECAST OF OCT. 6 WHITE HOUSE CONFERENCE ON CLIMATE CHANGE

DURHAM, N.H. -- The University of New Hampshire will host a satellite downlink telecast of the White House Conference on Climate Change: The Challenge of Global Warming.

The telecast is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 6, at the New England Center, and will be followed by a panel discussion featuring UNH experts on climate change research.

The telecast and panel discussion are free and open to the public.

The conference begins at 10 a.m. with welcoming remarks by President Bill Clinton and Vice President Al Gore. A presentation on the science of climate change and emission reduction technology follows at 10:20 a.m.

The conference continues after lunch with a presentation about the planned international global change conference in Kyoto, Japan, and U.S. national interests.

The UNH panel discussion, which begins at 3:15 p.m., will respond to questions from the audience. The panel will include:

John Aber, UNH professor of natural resources and a specialist in forest growth modeling;

Eleanor Abrams, UNH assistant professor of education, whose focus is science education;

Ken Colburn, director of the N.H. Air Resources Division;

Barry Keim, UNH assistant professor of geography and state climatologist;

Steven Winnett, EPA watershed specialist with EPA New England

Tom Kelly, director of the UNH Office of Sustainable Programs;

Barry Rock, director of the UNH Complex Systems Research Center and a specialist in forest damage assessment and remote sensing.

Rock encourages members of the public to attend the conference telecast and specifically, the panel discussion. "We're trying to present a balanced view of climate change and global warming," he explains. "The panel will address any questions about any possible causes of climate change."

The coordinating agency behind the conference -- to be downlinked to various sites across the country -- is the Environmental Protection Agency. Representatives from EPA New England are expected to attend the Durham telecast.
