University of Colorado Hospital Announces Gift, Hospital MoveThe University of Colorado Hospital announced a gift of $30 million from The Anschutz Foundation, to assist in building the hospital's inpatient pavilion at the Fitzsimons campus. The gift is in addition to $25 million given by the Foundation in January 2000 -- a total of $55 million, which ranks among the largest gifts to a hospital.

The original gift contributed to the construction of the Anschutz Centers for Advanced Medicine, the first new clinical construction at the Fitzsimons campus. This new gift will complete the original concept of the Anschutz Centers for Advanced Medicine, which will include the Outpatient Pavilion, Cancer Pavilion and Inpatient Pavilion.

The new $30 million gift was integral to the decision made today by the University of Colorado Hospital Authority Board of Directors to accelerate and expand the planned first phase of the hospital's inpatient pavilion. The board voted to increase the first phase of the facility from 56 beds to 100 beds. Future construction will add up to 150 more beds, completing the inpatient pavilion, which will be named the Anschutz Inpatient Pavilion.

"This gift will have a profound impact on the hospital's ability to meet our missions at Fitzsimons," said James Shore, MD, chancellor of the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center and chairman of the hospital board.

Combined with a $10 million gift last year from local businessman and University of Colorado Hospital board member Mike A. Leprino, this new gift makes it possible to bring together all the clinical facilities of the hospital at the new campus. The first phase of the inpatient pavilion should be open within about two years.

Accelerating the move of the inpatient hospital also will result in cost savings of up to $50 million of the $300 million project. All phases of the new inpatient pavilion are scheduled to be completed by 2007, at least two years earlier than scheduled in the original master plan.

"The vision of the University of Colorado Hospital at Fitzsimons has been given a tremendous boost with these generous gifts," said Dennis Brimhall, University of Colorado Hospital president. "We are pleased by the confidence and support in this project shown by such members of our community."

University of Colorado Hospital is the Rocky Mountain region's only academic tertiary care and referral center and has been recognized as one of America's Best Hospitals, according to U.S. News & World Report. Located in Denver, Colorado, the hospital is part of the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center campus, one of four campuses in the University of Colorado system.
