Newswise — The University of Virginia Darden School of Business today announced eight recently elected members of the Darden School Foundation Board of Trustees: Wesley Bush, Richard Mayo (MBA ’68), Sachin Mehra (MBA ’96), G. Ruffner Page Jr. (MBA ’86), Robert Smith (MBA ’87), Mark Styslinger, Lilo Simmons Ukrop (MBA ’89) and Steven Voorhees (MBA ’80). They will serve three-year terms beginning 1 July 2019. Additionally, Michelle Horn (MBA ’95), vice chair of the School’s Corporate Advisory Board, and Darden Professor Yael Grushka-Cockayne were appointed as ex-officio members of the board.
Bob Hugin (MBA ’85) begins the role of chair of the board of trustees on 1 July, succeeding outgoing chair Elizabeth Weymouth (MBA ’94). Martina Hund-Mejean (MBA ’88) joins the board’s leadership team as vice chair and Weymouth assumes the role of immediate past chair.
“The board of trustees is a dedicated group of engaged alumni and supporters who serve as critical leaders of Darden,” said Dean Scott Beardsley. “I am honored and grateful that our new trustees and board leadership have committed to help lead Darden to achieve the full potential of its mission.”
Bush is chairman of Northrop Grumman Corp., a global aerospace and defense technology company, a position he has held since 2011. Bush previously served as Northrop Grumman’s CEO from 2010–18. Prior to 2010, he served as the company’s president, COO, CFO and president of its space technology sector. Bush serves on the boards of several nonprofit organizations, including Conservation International, the Inova Health System and the USO Board of Governors. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering. Bush serves on the boards of Northrop Grumman, General Motors, Cisco and Dow. He holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in electrical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, as well as graduating from the UCLA Anderson School of Management’s executive management program.
Grushka-Cockayne is an associate professor at the Darden School. Her research and teaching activities focus on data science, forecasting, project management and behavioral decision making. Her research is published in numerous academic and professional journals, and she is a regular speaker at international conferences in the area of decision analysis, project management and management science. Grushka-Cockayne is also an award-winning teacher, winning numerous Darden teaching awards and the University of Virginia All-University Teaching award. Grushka-Cockayne teaches Darden’s core “Decision Analysis” course and electives on project management and data science. She leads the Darden Executive Education open-enrollment course Project Management for Executives. As an expert in the areas of project management, she has served as a consultant to international firms in the aerospace and pharmaceutical industries.
Horn is senior vice president and chief people officer at Softbank Group. Previously, she served as a partner and human capital leader at McKinsey & Co., where she oversaw global development, evaluation, engagement and retention of all client service personnel. Horn joined McKinsey in 1995 as a consultant and was elected partner in 2000. In prior roles at McKinsey, Horn served as chief of staff to the worldwide managing director, shaping the firm’s agenda to unleash growth in new capabilities, integrate expertise and accelerate emerging markets. Horn has an MBA from the Darden School, where she was a Shermet Scholar, and a bachelor’s in economics from the College of William and Mary.
Mayo is chairman and chief strategist at Game Creek Capital, a firm he helped start and has been invested in for ten years. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia in 1964, and began his investment career with the First Union National Bank in Charlotte, North Carolina. He received his MBA from the Darden School in 1968. After graduation, he was a security analyst for the Keystone Custodian Growth Fund. In 1969, he helped found Batterymarch Financial Management, where he served as a portfolio manager. In 1977, Mayo was a founding partner of the investment firm Grantham, Mayo, Van Otterloo & Co. LLC (GMO), and he was with GMO until he founded Mayo Capital Partners in January 2002. He joined Game Creek Capital in February of 2017. In 2014 Mayo helped to establish the Richard A. Mayo Center of Asset Management at the Darden School. Mayo serves on the Board of the Children’s Hospital Trust in Boston and has previously served on the Boards for The University of Virginia Management Company (UVIMCO), The Thomas Jefferson Foundation and on the Investment Committee for the MacArthur Foundation.
Mehra is CFO at Mastercard, responsible for corporate controller, tax, internal audit, investor relations, strategy, mergers and acquisitions, financial planning and analysis, treasury, risk management, global supply chain, business unit finance, and regional finance activities. Mehra also sits on the company’s management committee. Prior to the CFO role, he served as chief financial operations officer. He has also led the global development and commercialization of Mastercard’s commercial products and solutions that serve small business, mid- and large market organizations and public sector institutions; served as executive vice president and business financial officer for the company’s North America region; and joined the company as group executive and corporate treasurer.
Page is the president and CEO of McWane Inc. He joined McWane in 1993 and served as its executive vice president from 1994–98. Prior to McWane, he held management positions at National Bank of Commerce from 1989–93, the Remington Fund from 1986–89 and Bankers Trust Co. in New York and Atlanta. He currently serves on the boards of directors of McWane, Southern Research, Center State Bank of Florida, O’Neal Industries, ProxsysRx, CoreMatrix and The Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham. Page graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1981 with a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and psychology and a minor in economics. He graduated with an MBA from the Darden School in 1986.
Smith served as vice president and portfolio manager at T. Rowe Price Trust Co. From September 1992 to December 2016, Smith served in various roles at T. Rowe Price, including as vice president of T. Rowe Price Group Inc., vice president at T. Rowe Price Associates Inc. and as lead portfolio manager at T. Rowe Price International Inc. Previously, he worked as an investment analyst at MFS Investment Management, covering beverage, tobacco, food, electrical equipment and telecommunications companies. Smith has been an independent director of MGM Growth Properties LLC since January 2017. He holds a bachelor’s degree in finance and economics from the University of Delaware and an MBA from the Darden School.
Styslinger is the senior vice president of Altec Inc., the holding company for Altec Industries, Capital Services, National Equipment Co., Altec Worldwide, Global Rental and Altec Ventures. He became senior vice president of Altec in 1998. Altec was founded in 1929 and today is a global leader designing and manufacturing products and services for the electric utility, telecommunications and contractor markets in over 100 countries throughout the world. Styslinger earned a bachelor’s degree from the Southern Methodist University Cox School of Business in 1987. He played tennis for SMU and was selected as an all-American in the 1984 and 1985 seasons. He has four children and lives with his wife in Birmingham, Alabama.
Ukrop is a visiting lecturer at the Darden School, teaching “Reading Seminars in Management.” She founded and provided financial management for Corrugated Partners, Grace Street Residential Design Systems and TESCO LLC, a family-owned real estate holding company. Previously, she designed strategies for acquisition of manufacturing operations in developing markets at Tredegar Corp. As a community leader, Ukrop currently serves as co-president of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Foundation Board, past chair of the Westminster Canterbury Foundation Board, and board member of the St. James’s Endowment Fund and The Dean’s Council of the Washington National Cathedral. She has also served as senior warden and vestry member of St. James’s Episcopal Church, on the board of governors at both St. Christopher’s School and St. Catherine’s School, and as a member of the Darden Alumni Association Board of Directors. Ukrop has an MBA from the Darden School and a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Tulane University.
Voorhees is chief executive officer of WestRock, a global paper and packaging company based in Atlanta, Georgia, WestRock was formed in 2015 with the merger of MeadWestvaco and RockTenn. Previously, he was CEO of RockTenn, where he also served in various executive leadership roles, including president and COO, executive vice president and CFO, and chief administrative officer. Before joining RockTenn, Voorhees was in operations and executive roles at Sonat Inc., a diversified energy company headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama. Voorhees serves as a member of the board of directors of SunTrust Banks Inc., the National Association of Manufacturers and 3DE by Junior Achievement, a non-profit organization dedicated to reengineering high school education nationwide. He serves on the board of councilors of the Carter Center. He earned a bachelor’s degree in economics and mathematics from Northwestern University and an MBA from the Darden School.
