State public health veterinarian Russell Daly knows what the European poultry producers and their veterinarians are up against. In spring 2015, he served as a point person for information and understanding regarding efforts to contain the Midwestern outbreak of avian influenza in South Dakota.

Quickly diagnosing the disease and quarantining the affected flocks were key to containing the outbreak, according to Daly. “It’s heart-breaking for producers, but dealing with the problem quickly and efficiently is the best way to recover.”

He can be reached via cell phone at 605-690-5306 or [email protected]. The Midwestern poultry producers have recovered and what they’ve been through can help the Europeans, he pointed out.

Daly has been a practicing veterinarian for more than 25 years. He was a partner in a mixed animal veterinary practice for 15 years before becoming a faculty member at South Dakota State University’s Department of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences.

Since 2005, he has been the Extension Veterinarian and was interim director of the Animal Disease Research and Diagnostic Laboratory in 2013. The laboratory tested samples during the avian influenza outbreak and helped veterinarians and health officials identify and control the disease. In its aftermath, he provided information to veterinarians and poultry producers about biosecurity methods to prevent future infections.
