BOSTON -- Newswise — Mark S. Boguski, MD, PhD, has joined the faculty of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) as Associate Professor of Pathology. Internationally known for his leadership and expertise in bioinformatics and all aspects of genomics, Boguski also serves in the Center for Biomedical Informatics at Harvard Medical School (HMS).

He comes to BIDMC from Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research where he launched a new division of Genome and Proteome Sciences. "Dr. Boguski is one of the founding fathers of computational biology," says Jeffrey Saffitz, MD, PhD, Chief of Pathology at BIDMC. Between 1989 and 2000, while at the National Center for Biotechnology Information at the National Institutes of Health, Boguski pioneered a number of high-impact information resources that contributed to a sea change in the way biologists and biomedical researchers are able to benefit from the Human Genome Project.

Boguski received both the NIH Director's Award and the Regents Award from the National Library of Medicine, and is the author or coauthor of more than 150 scholarly articles and books. A former editor of Genome Research, he has served on the board of reviewing editors for Science magazine and also as Editor-in-Chief of Genomics. Boguski has served as an organizer of the Cold Spring Harbor Symposium on DNA Mapping, Sequencing & Biology, a member of the scientific advisory board of the Merck Genome Research Institute, a member of the Genetics Advisory Group for the Wellcome Trust and an advisor to the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.

Boguski is a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences and is as a fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics. He received MD and PhD degrees from the Medical Scientist Training Program at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.
