Newswise — WASHINGTON, DC (February 18, 2015)—Milken Institute School of Public Health (Milken Institute SPH) at the George Washington University (GW) will hold a public forum on February 25 that will address the impact of eating disorders. The event, to be held during National Eating Disorders Awareness Week, will feature a keynote talk by best-selling author Brian Cuban, who will talk about his own battle with an eating disorder and addiction, which is also the subject of his book, “Shattered Image: My Triumph Over Body Dysmorphic Disorder.”
Although women are more likely to be affected, an estimated ten million men will suffer from an eating disorder at some point in their life. Eating disorders have been called a “silent epidemic” because they are often hidden from view. Join us on February 25 for a candid exploration of disordered eating and body image dissatisfaction, which are health and mental health issues that affect many college-age men and women.
After the keynote talk there will be a Q and A with Mr. Cuban followed by a panel discussion including experts on eating disorders, campus resources, as well as GW students who will talk about their own personal experience and recovery journey. The panel will be moderated by Melissa Napolitano, PhD, an associate professor in prevention and community health at Milken Institute SPH who is also a psychologist with an expertise in the development of healthy eating habits.
