Newswise — The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory is pleased to announce that Admiral James G. Stavridis, former Commander of NATO Forces and current Dean of the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, will join APL as a Senior Fellow.

“We are honored to welcome Jim to our Senior Fellows program and the Johns Hopkins community,” said APL Director Ralph Semmel. “His keen understanding of national security issues will strengthen the Laboratory’s ability to develop solutions to critical global challenges.”

The Senior Fellows program seeks to bring together technology and policy in ways that better address the priorities of U.S. military leaders and senior government officials. Admiral Stavridis will join Senior Fellows Jim Miller, former Undersecretary of Defense for Policy, Jim Gosler, one of the nation’s foremost experts in cyber, and Phil DePoy, a former CEO of the Center for Naval Analysis.

“The convergence of science, technology, policy and law is a clear trend and one that leaders today and in the future must come to better understand,” Stavridis said. “I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to work with one of the country’s most prestigious R&D institutions on topics that affect international relations and defense priorities.”

Admiral Stavridis led the NATO Alliance in global operations from 2009 to 2013 as Supreme Allied Commander. He also led the U.S. Southern Command, with responsibility for military operations in Latin America.

A graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Stavridis earned a doctorate degree from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, and he focuses on innovation, strategic communication and planning, and international security. He is the author of many books, most recently The Accidental Admiral.
