Newswise — INDIANAPOLIS, IN- The American College of Sports Medicine is pleased to announce that Bess Marcus, Ph.D., is a recipient of its 2015 Citation Award. Dr. Marcus was selected for this award because of her significant contributions to sports medicine and the exercise sciences. She was recognized at an awards banquet during the association’s recent annual meeting.

“Citation Award winners are selected for their leadership and contributions in the areas of research and scholarship, clinical care, administrative services or educational services,” said Lawrence Armstrong, Chair of the ACSM Awards and Tributes Committee. “We’re happy to recognize Dr. Marcus’ tremendous accomplishments.”

Dr. Marcus is a professor and chair of the Department of Family Medicine and Public Health and senior associate dean for public health at the University of California, San Diego. She is noted for her work in applying the transtheoretical model to exercise and physical activity behavior, which remains the standard for the application of this health behavior model to exercise and physical activity interventions and clinical practice.

Dr. Marcus has published more than 225 peer reviewed scientific papers, many books and book chapters, and the NIH has continuously funded her research since 1989. She has also led efforts to raise awareness of the importance of understanding physical activity and exercise behavior into mainstream public health efforts to promote physical activity.

Dr. Marcus received one of six Citation Awards that were awarded in 2015. Other recipients include:
