Newswise — The Society for Nutrition Education and Behavior (SNEB) announces Lora Beth Brown, EdD, RDN as the recipient of 2015 Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Nutrition in Higher Education Award. The award will be presented at the 48th SNEB Annual Conference, “Creativity & Innovation in Nutrition Education,” in Pittsburgh, PA on Monday, July 27th, during the SNEB Annual Business Meeting and Awards Ceremony.

Dr. Lora Beth Brown has had a wide variety of experiences in her career of nutrition education. Among her teaching experience, she has taught nutrition to low income Latino families, members of the community, and college students. While teaching nutrition to college students at Brigham Young University in 1974, she focused on lower level nutrition courses that encouraged thousands of students to use the nutrition principles that they learned in everyday life. Dr. Lora Beth Brown went on to earn her doctorate in Secondary Education from BYU and became a professor in 2013.

Not only did Dr. Lora Beth Brown teach thousands of students about nutrition, but she also used her passion to mentor 130 undergraduate students and train about 90 nutrition outreach workers during internships in places such as Mexico, Guatemala, Bolivia, Ecuador, Ghana, Mongolia, Western Samoa, and Tonga. Throughout her career she has presented 54 abstracts at professional meetings, written 7 book chapters, and published 28 articles in peer-reviewed journals.

She has been involved with the Society for Nutrition Education and Behavior almost as long as it has been around and has a 47 year collection of JNE/JNEB. Dr. Lora Beth Brown has also served as Chair for the divisions of Higher Education, International Nutrition Education, and Weight Realities.

What advice does Lora Beth have for future nutrition educators? Here are what she calls her “Brown’s Laws:” 1. Focus on the Practical, Foods, Positive aspects of nutrition and let the Abstract, Nutrient, Negative aspects play supporting roles.2. Promote the smallest possible changes that are culturally appropriate, with the greatest health benefits.3. Be creative and have fun!

The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Nutrition in Higher Education Award is presented to recognize outstanding SNEB members for their scholarly contributions to and student engagement in higher education.
