Newswise — The Society for Nutrition Education and Behavior (SNEB) announces Elena Carbone, DrPH, RD, LDN, as the recipient of 2015 Mid-Career Award in Nutrition Education. The award will be presented at the 48th SNEB Annual Conference, “Creativity & Innovation in Nutrition Education,” in Pittsburgh, PA on Monday, July 27, during the SNEB Annual Business Meeting and Awards Ceremony.

Dr. Carbone’s passion for education in the field of nutrition has led to her success in many avenues. From teaching and training to research and grant activity, she has continuously made significant contributions to the mission of SNEB. She has presented over 50 workshops, authored over 30 refereed publications, and currently works as a frequent ad hoc reviewer for nine professional journals.

In her nomination of Dr. Carbone, Nancy Cohen, PhD, RD, LDN, wrote “Dr. Carbone is an award winning educator who has been a faculty member in the Department of Nutrition at the University of Massachusetts Amherst since fall of 2000. As such, she has Chaired/co-chaired PhD, Masters, and undergraduate theses and taught a variety of courses relevant to the field of nutrition education to undergraduates and graduates in the US and internationally. She has also developed numerous nutrition education programs and workshops.”

A passion for nutrition has driven Dr. Carbone to serve as Principal Investigator (PI)/co-PI on 14 research grants totaling nearly $2 million to create community-based nutrition education programs with multi-ethnic populations with limited literacy skills related to obesity prevention, diabetes self-management, cancer control, and food safety. She has also been invited to consult on numerous projects and studies.

Nominator, Dr. Nancy Cohen also noted, “She is currently a Strategic Communications Consultant at CommunicateHealth where she is providing nutrition subject matter expertise to support the design, development, and dissemination of the 2015 Dietary Guidelines for Americans.” In the past Dr. Carbone has also served as Program Evaluator/Methods Consultant/Senior Evaluation Specialist for nutrition projects including a Community Farm-to-Preschool Program, hypertension and diabetes self-management interventions for Latinos, and Extension Nutrition Education programs for low income individuals.

Along with her efforts to educate and consult for the public about nutrition education, Dr. Carbone has used her skills and expertise to author publications in journals such as Journal Nutrition Education and Behavior, Journal Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, Nutrition Reviews, Journal Food Science Education, Patient Education and Counseling, Health Education Research, and Diabetes Educator. In addition to publishing journals, she has also designed and written more than 50 nutrition education newsletters.

Dr. Carbone’s contribution to effective nutrition education is also displayed through her professional affiliations and service. She has been a long time contributor to the leadership and advancement nutrition education at all levels. Cohen wrote, “In addition to her academic service as Graduate Program Director in Nutrition at UMass (since 2007) and Founding Director of the Community-Engaged Research Program (since 2012), she has also served as Interim Department Head, Undergraduate Program Director, Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) Director, and Dietetic Internship Director.” Dr. Carbone began her career as a clinical dietitian at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and later served as Nutrition Advisor for the U.S. Public Health Service in Washington, DC.

The mid-career award is presented to recognize an SNEB member in “mid-career” regarding his/her professional accomplishments in the field of nutrition education and significant contribution to the mission of SNEB. Recipients must have a record of outstanding achievements in the field of nutrition education and made acknowledged accomplishments in the field.
