Newswise — CHICAGO (Aug. 5, 2015) — For the second year in a row, the American Academy of Dermatology and the Chicago Bears are teaming up to promote skin cancer prevention and detection by hosting free SPOTme® skin cancer screenings.

The free screenings, which will be conducted by local board-certified dermatologists, will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 6, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 7. Screening participants will be eligible to win autographed Bears memorabilia.

“Football players and their fans spend a lot of time outside at midday, when the sun’s rays are the strongest. We want our fans to be aware of their skin cancer risk and take steps to protect themselves, just like the Bears players and coaches do,” said Chris Hibbs, Chicago Bears Vice President of Sales and Marketing.

It is estimated that 2,380 new cases of melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, will be diagnosed in Illinois this year. Although anyone can get skin cancer, men ages 50 and older have a higher risk than the general population of developing melanoma.

“One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime, so everyone should take steps to protect themselves from the sun’s ultraviolet rays,” said board-certified dermatologist Ashish Bhatia, MD, FAAD, Associate Professor of Clinical Dermatology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago. “The Academy recommends seeking shade, wearing protective clothing and applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Skin cancer is highly treatable when detected early, and these free SPOTme® screenings are a great opportunity to get your skin checked by a dermatologist.”
