Newswise — CHICAGO – A team of food science students from the California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo have been named the winner in the annual Disney Consumer Products—Institute of Food Technologists Students Association (IFTSA) Product Development Competition during IFT15: Where Science Feeds Innovation in Chicago.

Food science college student teams across the country were tasked with creating a market-relevant, delicious and nutritious food or beverage retail snack product that meets Disney Nutritional Guidelines and integrates either a fruit, vegetable, low-fat dairy product or whole grains, is targeted to children 10 and younger, and incorporates one of the selected Disney character franchises.

California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo team’s product is called the Build a Snowman Kit, a fun, interactive snack containing a cracker, fruit and vegetable spread, and toppings featuring Olaf from Disney’s Frozen. This multi-component snack is aimed at providing children ages 2-10 a fun way to incorporate whole grain and fruit into their daily diet. Team members included: Vidita Deshpande (team captain), Michelle Reimer, Franca Rossi, and May Cheng.

The winning team received a check for $7,500, and the runner-up team, from The University of Georgia, received a check for $3,500 for their product called Snow Snacks. All other teams received $1,000 for honorable mention.

The IFT Student Association (IFTSA) is a forward-looking, student-governed community of IFT members. All IFT student members are automatically members of the IFT Student Association. IFTSA enables food science students to interact with peers at other universities and with working professionals and gain real world knowledge through a number of competitions held annually.
