Newswise — WASHINGTON – Anne E. Kazak, PhD, ABPP, an eminent psychological clinician, researcher, educator and administrator, has been named editor-in-chief of American Psychologist, the flagship journal of the American Psychological Association.

Kazak is the first editor of the journal who is not also CEO of APA, according to the APA Board of Directors, which made the appointment.

“Anne Kazak is the ideal choice to be editor-in-chief of American Psychologist,” said APA President Barry S. Anton, PhD. “She is a proven editor and a brilliant scholar in her own right, having published many papers, chapters and books related to psychological aspects of health for children and families. She is also an acclaimed teacher and a mentor who brings a breadth of knowledge and experience that is a perfect match for the editorship of the American Psychologist.”

Kazak is co-director of the Center for Healthcare Delivery Science at Nemours Children’s Health System, based at A. I. du Pont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, Delaware. She is also the co-director of the Center for Pediatric Traumatic Stress, a Treatment and Services Adaptation Center in the National Child Traumatic Stress Network. She is an experienced editor, having edited the Journal of Pediatric Psychology and the Journal of Family Psychology and currently serves as editor-in-chief of the APA journal Health Psychology, a post she has held since 2010.

“Dr. Kazak has extensive editorial experience, having edited three other journals,” said Gary R. VandenBos, PhD, APA publisher. “Her broad perspective in research, practice, education and publishing made her a unique and superior candidate for the AP editorship. As an editor, she is renowned for her constructive editorial feedback, which enhances the quality of every contribution.”

“I am honored to have been chosen to edit APA’s flagship journal,” Kazak said. “We will build on the considerable strengths of AP while enlarging its scope to also emphasize major empirical papers with broad significance. The journal will encompass coverage of all components of the broad field of psychology.”

Kazak, who lives in Havertown, Pennsylvania, is a licensed psychologist and professor of pediatrics at Jefferson Medical School of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia and adjunct professor of psychology at the University of Delaware. Kazak’s experience as a clinician, researcher and administrator has helped to advance integrated medical and behavioral care for children and families. She is a frequent consultant and reviewer on national and international projects related to pediatric psychology. Kazak is the recipient of many research grants and several awards, including the American Psychological Foundation Cummings PSYCHE Prize (2009) for integrated care. She received her PhD in clinical-community psychology from the University of Virginia and completed her internship training at Yale University School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Smith College.

As the official journal of APA, American Psychologist contains archival documents and articles covering current issues across the discipline ranging from science and practice to psychology’s contribution to public policy.

The journal publishes articles that are current, timely and of interest to the broad APA membership. Articles published are written in a style that is accessible and of interest to all psychologists, regardless of area of specialization. Contributions often address national and international policy issues.
