Newswise — In the U.S. News & World Report’s Best Business Programs report released today, the undergraduate business program at UC Irvine’s Paul Merage School of Business has climbed five spots to 34th (tied) in the nation and 22nd (tied) among public schools.

Established in fall 2008, the Merage School undergraduate program is the youngest business program among the top 50 included in the U.S. News rankings report. Since its inception, the Merage School has graduated four cohorts of undergraduate students and has ranked among the top 50 schools since its inaugural listing last year. “We introduced this program in 2008 to an environment of pent up demand, promising to deliver undergraduate business education at the quality level associated with an elite business school,” said Eric Spangenberg, dean of The Paul Merage School of Business. “Climbing five places in only the second year of our program ranking is a clear indicator of how exceptionally we are delivering on that promise while successfully competing with other schools at our level.”

“The high GPA scores of our incoming students and our ability to be selective in our acceptance rate are indicators of our momentum and the rigors of our undergraduate program,” said Professor Rick So, professor of Operations and Decision Technologies and associate dean of the Undergraduate Programs at the Merage School. “This year alone we received upwards of 10,000 applications for the 150 open slots in our program. This extraordinary demand, combined with the positive reinforcement we are getting from recruiters, should continue to drive our rankings upward.”

“This really is remarkable. To be recognized among the top 50 AACSB accredited schools in the U.S., especially considering we have only just graduated our fourth full class, is unprecedented,” said Denise Patrick, assistant dean and director of Undergraduate Programs at the Merage School. “As our program turns eight years old this fall, it is an honor to be included among schools that range in age from 47-134 years. Our students are truly extraordinary, and we are extremely proud to have the most diverse class of those ranked in the top 50.”

US News ranked undergraduate business programs accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), solely on surveys of B-school deans and senior faculty. Participants were asked to rate the quality of business programs with which they’re familiar on a scale of 1 (marginal) to 5 (distinguished).
