Newswise — The National University of Singapore (NUS) is Asia’s number one university, and placed 26th globally in the latest Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2015-2016. It is the only Asian university to be among the world’s top 30.

This year, THE World University Rankings draws on data from 1,100 institutions, 11 million academic papers, and more than 11,000 academic surveys to develop a list of top 800 universities from 70 countries. It employs 13 separate performance indicators to reflect a university’s strengths in five Pillars, each of which represents a key area of higher education excellence: Teaching, Research, Citations, Industry Income and International Outlook.

According to the latest ranking results, NUS is in the global top 10 for international outlook and global top 30 for teaching and research.

NUS President Professor Tan Chorh Chuan said, “We are pleased that NUS has been placed among the leading universities in the world and top in Asia. Our achievements are the result of the strong support from the government, as well as commitment to excellence by our faculty, staff and students. Our goal is to create distinctive value through pioneering innovations in education, deepening strategic partnerships with leading global institutions, as well as excelling in research and its translation to realise the economic and social value of our work for Singapore and beyond. Most importantly, we seek to ensure that our students fulfill their potential and make meaningful contributions to society.”

Mr Phil Baty, Editor, Times Higher Education World University Rankings, said, “Congratulations to the National University of Singapore which is today crowned as Asia’s number one university – the first time in the 12-year history of the THE World University Rankings. The THE World University Rankings are uniquely comprehensive – they use 13 separate performance indicators to judge world-class universities against all of their key missions, including both teaching and research, using tough, global standards. So NUS has proven its strength in depth against the highest global standards.”

“NUS’ new position as Asia’s top university and among the very best of the world’s elite research universities is thoroughly deserved,” Mr Baty added.
