Newswise — EVANSTON, Ill. --- A panel of experts at Northwestern University, moderated by WBEZ’s Jerome McDonnell, will reflect on a global model to successfully respond to today’s refugee crisis.
Hosted by Northwestern University’s Center for Forced Migration Studies (CFMS), the panel discussion will take place Thursday, Dec. 3, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. The event will launch the center’s Refugee Resettlement Program.
Panelists will reflect on the United States Refugee Resettlement Program, a global model for a successful humanitarian response to today’s refugee crisis.
“The United States Refugee Resettlement Program: A Global Model for Successful Humanitarian Response?” will be held in the Segal Visitors Center on the University’s Evanston campus, 1841 Sheridan Road. A reception will follow.
The panel, moderated by McDonnell, host of WBEZ’s “Worldview,” will include:

Robert Carey, director of the Office of Refugee Resettlement
Ngoan Le, Illinois State Refugee coordinator, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services
Suzanne Akhras Sahloul, director of the Syrian Refugee Network
While millions of refugees dream of resettlement, it is an option for less than 1 percent of the 17 million refugees worldwide today. The United States continues to be the world’s leader in refugee protection with the most generous admission levels, according to the CFMS.
Ongoing public support for refugee resettlement depends on public awareness of the long-term benefits of resettlement policy, the successful integration of refugees into their new communities and the positive economic impact of resettlement on the U.S.
