Dr. Jeffrey Quinlan, Navy Doctor, to Chair "America's Medical School" Family Medicine Department

Newswise — Bethesda, MD – Navy Captain (Dr.) Jeffrey D. Quinlan was selected as the new chair of the Department of Family Medicine at the F. Edward Hebert School of Medicine at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USU). Quinlan, an associate professor and vice chair in the department, will lead the department of approximately 30 faculty and staff, including family physicians and behavioral health providers. The department has consistently ranked among the top in the nation by the American Academy of Family Physicians, the largest U.S. physician specialty society.

Quinlan earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry and a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from the University of Pittsburgh in 1988. He completed his Doctor of Medicine degree from Pitt in 1992 under the Armed Forces Health Professions Scholarship Program. Quinlan pursued his Family Medicine training at the Naval Hospital in Charleston, South Carolina, and at the Naval Hospital, Camp Pendleton, California. He later completed a Maternity Care fellowship at Florida Hospital in Orlando.

Since entering medical practice in the Navy, Quinlan he provided care at a number of military treatment facilities, including the Naval Hospitals in Sigonella, Sicily, and Jacksonville, Florida (where he also served as Family Medicine residency program director) and was later stationed at the Navy Medicine Support Command in Jacksonville. In addition to his current assignment at USU, Quinlan also serves as the Chairman of the Student Promotions Committee. Quinlan deployed three times in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Additionally, he was appointed by the Navy Surgeon General as Specialty Leader for Family Medicine from 2010 – 2014. Quinlan served as the acting chair of the Department of Medical and Clinical Psychology at USU from March 2014 to November 2015.

Quinlan is a member of the Uniformed Services Academy of Family Physicians, the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine, the American Academy of Family Physicians and Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He serves as an associate editor for the American Academy of Family Physician’s Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics Advisory Board and has been a member of the National Quality Forum’s Perinatal Care Project Steering Committee.

Quinlan will succeed Navy Capt. (Dr.) Mark Stephens in the position later this summer.
