Newswise — With a meeting theme of “Neurosurgery Leading the Way,” the slate of speakers for the 2016 American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) Annual Scientific Meeting represents leadership across many venues, from the military to neurosurgery to art.
Gen. Peter W. Chiarelli will be presenting the Hunt-Wilson Lecture. This lecture is made possible thanks to an endowment established by Timir Banerjee, MD, FAANS(L), in honor of his mentors, William Hunt, MD; and Charles Wilson, MD. Chiarelli served as the 32nd vice chief of staff of the U.S. Army from 2008-2012, where he was responsible for day-to-day operations, including the implementation of recommendation related to its behavior health programs. Currently the CEO of ONE MIND, a non-profit organization dedicated to the research of mental illness and brain injuries, Chiarelli continues his advocacy to benefit all affected by brain disease and injury.
The Richard Schneider Lecture will be presented by Alim L. Benabid, MD, PhD, IFAANS. Benabid is a professor emeritus, neurosurgeon and member of the Academy of Sciences in France. His career has had global impact in the development of deep brain stimulation (DBS) for Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders through the creation of an effective and reversible intervention that remedies neuronal misfirings.
The Rhoton Family Lecture will be presented by José Francisco Salgado, PhD. Salgado is an Emmy-nominated astronomer, experimental photographer, visual artist and public speaker who creates multimedia works that communicate science in engaging ways.
Duke S. Samson, MD, FAANS, will present the Osler Lecture, Thomas J. Nasca, MD, will present the Theodore Kurze Lecture, Geoffrey Lind, MD, PhD, Col. (Ret.), will present the Van Wagenen Lecture, and Maria Siemionow, MD, PhD, DSc, will present the Louise Eisenhardt Lecture.
