EVENT: Global Food Summit: Sustainable Solutions is the second of a two-part Global Food Security conference held at University of California, Irvine. Internationally renowned food security leaders, practitioners and academics will address critical topics, ranging from global efforts to improve agriculture to the promise of technological advances. HIGHLIGHTS: 9:30 a.m. Thursday - Nora Gilbert, a food system policy researcher for the Union of Concerned Scientists, will give keynote address, replacing Mark Bittman.
10:30 a.m. Thursday - Panel discussion on “Perspectives on Global Food Security.”
2 p.m. Thursday - Presentation by Helene Dillard, dean of the UC Davis College of Agriculture & Environmental Sciences, on research and outreach to improve food and agriculture.
9:30 a.m. Friday - Janet Napolitano, president of the University of California, will give keynote address about the Global Food Initiative and its partnership with the Blum Center for Poverty Alleviation.
2 p.m. Friday - UCI researchers will discuss “Nutrition and Poverty Alleviation: Basic science from biology and medicine.”
2 p.m. Friday - Erwin Chemerinsky, UCI dean of law, and Jose Padilla of California Rural Legal Assistance, Inc., will discuss “Establishing Food System Equality: The contributions of law.”
BACKGROUND: Hosted by the Blum Center for Poverty Alleviation, GFS: Sustainable Solutions will assemble international leaders, practitioners, and academics from across the UC system. Programs are designed to inspire critical thinking about the intersection of food security and climate action, to collaborate on the work being done, and to identify priorities that the academic world can and must address. A unifying theme of the two-day summit is the linked frameworks for ending hunger and addressing climate change established in 2015: the Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement. In collaboration with the Global Food Initiative and the University of California Office of the President, these discussions will facilitate research and education programs for the Blum Centers, with food security as the entry point for larger interdisciplinary action on poverty and development, climate change, and health.
