Newswise — Eastpointe, MI - The American Autoimmune Related Diseases Association (AARDA) hosted its 16th Annual Derby Luncheon and Auction on Saturday, May 7 at MacRay Harbor on Lake St. Clair in Harrison Township. The Derby also commemorated AARDA’s 25th anniversary.

The “Father of Autoimmune Disease”, Noel R. Rose, M.D., Ph.D., was presented with AARDA’s 2016 Champion award for his contributions to autoimmunity and immunotoxicology, including his ground-breaking discovery of thyroid autoimmunity in 1956. He has local ties as he served as the chair of the Department of Immunology and Microbiology at Wayne State University School of Medicine for 10 years. He is a member of WSU’s Academy of Scholars. Additionally, he founded the Autoimmune Disease Research Center at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.

“I have been presented with many awards during my career but this award means the most to me. I often refer to AARDA as the little mouse that roared. It is a small organization that has changed the biomedical world. I am extremely pleased to be involved and will continue to work towards a cure for autoimmune disease patients,” said Dr. Rose.

Dr. Abid Khan, the Medical Director for the Autoimmune Center at MidMichigan Health, presented Dr. Rose and Virginia T. Ladd, the Executive Director and founder of AARDA, with certificates of appreciation.

Proceeds from the event will be used for patient services, research, awareness and education. AARDA will continue its year-long 25th anniversary celebration on October 8th with its inaugural Autoimmune Walk that will be held on Belle Isle in Detroit.
