Newswise — (TORONTO, Canada – August 15, 2016) – As one of the pre-eminent training grounds for professional hockey talent, the OHL certainly needs no introduction when it comes to making news in the hockey world, except when they are lending their support in the fight to end cancer.

The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation is thrilled to announce the Ontario Hockey League Alumni Association (OHLAA) will be supporting this year’s Scotiabank Road Hockey to Conquer Cancer event. By entering a team of former players, they are picking up their sticks and bringing together old teammates/rivals all in the name of furthering The Princess Margaret’s vision to conquer cancer in our lifetime.

Since it launched in 2011, Scotiabank Road Hockey to Conquer Cancer has raised more than $13.5 million dollars across Canada for cancer research at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, one of the top 5 cancer research centres in the world.

Justin Robinson, Chairman of the Board at OHLAA, recognizes the alumni associations’ role in leveraging Canada’s game as a catalyst for positive change. “The OHL Alumni Association truly believes we can make a difference in the lives of our alumni, respective communities and worthwhile causes if we work together and combine our effort, just as we once did as players in the OHL. We are pleased to direct our combined energy to support the Scotiabank Road Hockey to Conquer Cancer event. Partnering with the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation is a great opportunity for all of our Alumni to get involved and give back to a tremendous cause.”

“The fact that the OHLAA has chosen to support Scotiabank Road Hockey to Conquer Cancer further demonstrates the commitment of the hockey community to help us leverage Canada’s game to beat this terrible disease. We can’t thank the OHLAA and their membership enough for their generous support!” says Shawn Burt, Chief Hockey Officer at The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation.

Scotiabank Road Hockey to Conquer Cancer is a one-day road hockey event in which teams play five games through the course of the day. Last year, it set two world records and is now the largest road hockey fundraising event in the world. To date, more than 8,500 participants have taken part. This year, it takes place on Saturday, October 1st at Woodbine Racetrack in Etobicoke. More than 1,500 people are expected to participate with many more joining their loved ones onsite throughout the day.

On June 16, 2016 OHLAA held an inaugural golf tournament to reach their teams fundraising goal of $20,000. As a result, $3,600 was raised for the Scotiabank Road Hockey to Conquer Cancer event.
