Newswise — On Tuesday, August 23, 2016, the University of Minnesota Technological Leadership Institute (TLI) will host an open meeting of the Commission on Enhancing National Cybersecurity. The University of Minnesota is one of just five locations where the Commission is hosting meetings.
In February 2016, President Obama announced a Cybersecurity National Action Plan (CNAP) to improve our nation’s cybersecurity. A central feature of that plan is the non-partisan Commission on Enhancing National Cybersecurity. The Commission has been traveling to select cities to learn about the challenges and opportunities to improve cybersecurity.
“The University of Minnesota has had a long, distinguished history of pioneering contributions to security,” said Dr. Massoud Amin, director of the Technological Leadership Institute. “For nearly three decades, TLI has been developing the next generation of technological leaders through our Master of Science degrees. Our more than 1,300 alumni are successfully innovating in all areas of technology.”
The meeting will address the following topics: challenges confronting consumers in the digital economy; innovation (Internet of Things, healthcare, and other areas); and assured products and services. Dr. Amin will give the opening remarks, and Mike Johnson, director of graduate studies for the M.S. in Security Technologies degree program is one of the expert panelists selected to address the Commission on the topic of Challenges Confronting Consumers in the Digital Economy.
The Commission is comprised of the following security experts:
• Tom Donilon, former Assistant to the President and National Security Advisor (Chair)• Sam Palmisano, former CEO of IBM (Vice Chair)• General Keith Alexander, CEO of IronNet Cybersecurity, former Director of the National Security Agency and former Commander of U.S. Cyber Command• Annie Antón, Professor and Chair of the School of Interactive Computing at Georgia Tech.• Ajay Banga, President and CEO of MasterCard• Steven Chabinsky, General Counsel and Chief Risk Officer of CrowdStrike• Patrick Gallagher, Chancellor of the University of Pittsburgh and former Director of the National Institute of Standards and Technology• Peter Lee, Corporate Vice President, Microsoft Research• Herbert Lin, Senior Research Scholar for Cyber Policy and Security at the Stanford Center for International Security and Cooperation and Research Fellow at the Hoover Institution• Heather Murren, former member of the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission and co-founder of the Nevada Cancer Institute• Joe Sullivan, Chief Security Officer of Uber and former Chief Security Officer of Facebook• Maggie Wilderotter, Executive Chairman of Frontier Communications
Upon completion of the national tour of meetings, the Commissioners will use what they have learned to recommend bold, actionable steps the nation can take to improve cybersecurity.
