Newswise — Bernard T. Ferrari, dean of the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School, has awarded the Dean’s Medal to Robyn and N. Anthony “Tony” Coles, Jr. As business executives and philanthropists, Robyn and Tony Coles adhered to a philosophy at the heart of the Carey School mission ― engaging in personal, professional, and philanthropic endeavors that aim to make a positive impact on society. The medals were presented to the Coleses during the Carey Business School’s commencement ceremony on August 9, 2016. The Dean’s Medal is the highest honor of the Carey Business School.
“Robyn and Tony Coles are true leaders both within the business community and Johns Hopkins University. Their dedication to the values and mission of the Carey Business School and Johns Hopkins is evidenced in the work that they do and by their generous support of both institutions,” said Dean Ferrari. “It is with our deepest gratitude that I bestow this honor.”
Robyn Coles is president of TRATE Properties, a real estate management and ventures company. As a philanthropist, she has been active as a fundraiser for health care causes, including efforts to combat cancer. Previously, she was president of the medical supply company Scientific Supplies Network.
Tony Coles was chairman and chief executive officer of Onyx Pharmaceuticals, which, during his tenure, introduced two innovative cancer medicines. He previously held executive positions at NPS Pharmaceuticals, Vertex Pharmaceuticals, Bristol-Myers Squibb, and Merck. A graduate of Johns Hopkins University, Dr. Coles also serves as vice chair of the board of trustees of Johns Hopkins University and is a member of the board of trustees of Johns Hopkins Medicine.
Both Robyn and Tony Coles have provided philanthropic support to entities throughout Johns Hopkins University, including the Carey School, the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences, the Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine, and the university’s libraries. At Carey, the Tony Coles Scholarship supports financial aid at the business school, with preference to students who have demonstrated financial need, completed their undergraduate studies at either the Krieger School or the Whiting School of Engineering, and are pursuing a career or further graduate education in health care.
Established in 2016, the Dean’s Medal honors extraordinary service, philanthropy, and leadership on behalf of the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School. The award recognizes commitment to the Carey mission of developing new business knowledge and educating business leaders who will grow economies and societies, and are exemplary citizens.
