Newswise — PARK RIDGE, Ill. – Arthur Don Johnson, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA), from San Antonio, Texas, has been named the 2016 Didactic Instructor of the Year by the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA). Johnson receives the award during AANA’s Nurse Anesthesia Annual Congress, held September 9-13, 2016, in Washington, D.C.

The Didactic Instructor of the Year Award, established in 1991, is presented to an individual who has made a significant contribution to the education of student nurse anesthetists in the classroom.

A retired Colonel from the U.S. Air Force, Johnson is professor of nurse anesthesia and former director of research at the U.S. Army Graduate Program in Anesthesia Nursing (USAGPAN) and Northeastern University. He is an impassioned researcher, mentor and highly respected didactic instructor. He has taken his skills as an instructor from Texas to the United Kingdom to California, Louisiana, and full circle back to Texas. He has been selected Teacher of the Year three times, and Researcher of the Year twice.

“I am deeply honored,” said Johnson. “I would like to dedicate this award to all of my former and current students. I am deeply humbled and honored to receive this prestigious award!”

“As a professor and director of research at the U.S. Army Graduate Program in Anesthesia Nursing (USAGPAN), Dr. Johnson has been instrumental in educating and inspiring hundreds of outstanding U.S. Army, U.S. Air Force, and Veterans Administration student registered nurse anesthetists (SRNAs),” said LTC Jennifer L. Coyner, PhD, CRNA, and current director of the USAGPAN. “His tireless commitment and dedication to excellence has elevated the quality of the Army’s nurse anesthesia program for over a decade. His passion for basic science research, talent for teaching, and love of the USAGPAN mission has inspired graduate students to develop an appreciation for the rigors of basic science research. Dr. Johnson’s students consistently demonstrate impressive growth in the ability to discuss research design and methods, articulate results, and to write a scholarly manuscript often leading to publication in peer-reviewed journals. This unique highlight of the USAGPAN will always be credited to Dr. Johnson, who has more than 200 published manuscripts and abstracts. He has been a trusted mentor to SRNAs, CRNAs, physicians, young educators, colleagues, and friends. His impact as an educator is evident in the talent and success of his long line of graduates.”

The AANA extends its congratulations to Arthur Johnson, PhD, RN, COL(ret), on being selected the 2016 Didactic Instructor of the Year.
