Newswise — WHATDr. Patricia Gándara, a leading researcher on English language learners and bilingual education, will deliver a lecture titled “Educating Immigrant Students and Emergent Bilinguals” as part of the American Educational Research Association’s Centennial Lecture Series. The event is open to the public.

Gándara, Research Professor and Co-Director of the Civil Rights Project at the University of California, Los Angeles, will discuss how the historically fraught relationship between the United States and immigrant communities has impacted the way we treat immigrant languages. She will present compelling research that shows that biliteracy education—rather than transitional bilingual education that uses a student’s primary language as a bridge to English—benefits both students and the nation in important ways. New studies suggest that it would be wise for schools to embrace policies and practices that support biliteracy education.

Gándara’s 25-minute-long lecture will be followed by a discussion moderated by Sarah Garland, Executive Editor of The Hechinger Report. During the discussion, experts on bilingual education will comment on Gándara’s talk and join her in fielding questions from the audience.
