Newswise — December 2, 2016 (Waterloo, Ontario, Canada) – The holy grail of medicine is to stop diseases – finding a cure rather than treating symptoms. Using the most modern techniques in regenerative medicine, scientists now see some hope of stopping diseases before they take hold, and repairing the damage existing illnesses have wrought.
In a Dec. 7 public lecture at Perimeter Institute, regenerative medicine specialist Molly Shoichet will tell three compelling stories about how new techniques developed in her lab are changing the way we will treat cancer, blindness, strokes, and other diseases in the future. Along the way, she will discuss the underlying innovations in chemistry, engineering, and biology, and exciting opportunities that collaborative, multi-disciplinary research hold for the future.
The talk, titled “Engineering Change in Medicine,” is part of the Perimeter Institute Public Lecture Series, supported by Presenting Sponsor BMO Financial Group. The lecture will be webcast live on the Perimeter Institute website and via partner organizations on Wednesday Dec. 7 at 7 PM ET.
A Canada Research Chair in Tissue Engineering at the University of Toronto, Shoichet has published over 530 papers, patents, and abstracts, and currently leads a laboratory of 25 researchers and students. She has founded two spin-off companies, and is actively engaged in translational research and science outreach. The recipient of many prestigious distinctions, Shoichet is the only person to be a Fellow of Canada’s three National Academies: the Canadian Academy of Sciences of the Royal Society of Canada, the Canadian Academy of Engineering, and the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences.
