Newswise — WARMINSTER, Pa. — Abraxis, Inc., announces expansion of its AbraMag magnetic beads line for molecular biology, biochemistry and sample prep applications, with the addition of mRNA purification beads and kit.

AbraMag Magnetic Beads are superparamagnetic, nonaggregating iron oxide particles (or “microspheres”) derivatized with functional groups such as capture antibodies, nickel, streptavidin, protein A/G, oligos or charged groups. Magnetic bead capture offers numerous advantages over conventional methods (which use columns or centrifugation) for purifying proteins, antibodies, DNA/RNA and E. coli:

  • Faster and simpler.
  • Less expensive.
  • Greater yield and purity.
  • Gentler: No shear forces, no centrifugation.
  • No columns or expensive equipment needed.
  • Easily adapted to different sample types.
  • Ideal for automation.

AbraMag mRNA Purification Magnetic Beads are coupled with oligo(dT)25, allowing them to bind polyadenylated messenger RNA at high capacity and elute mRNA essentially free of ribosomal RNA.

Abraxis’ expertise lies in environmental test kits, but in familiar formats like immunoassay. Some of the kits utilize antibody-coupled magnetic beads to concentrate the target analyte prior to detection. To avoid the quality and cost issues inherent in the magnetic beads market, Abraxis developed a unique manufacturing method, created a library of magnetic bead varieties and screened the library for desirable properties (e.g. capacity and purity). The result gave rise to the AbraMag product line, which surpass leading competitors’ magnetic beads in capacity, yield and purity all at the best market value.
