Newswise — Olin College of Engineering is ranked #3 in the nation among undergraduate engineering programs, according to the just-released 2019 U.S. News college rankings. Additionally, Olin’s Mechanical Engineering degree program holds the #4 spot nationally, according to US News.

“I believe this ranking and other recognition we’ve received recently show that the value of our transformative education is becoming more and more widely known,” said Richard K. Miller, president of Olin College. “This is true both in the educational marketplace and among institutions the world over that are exploring new directions to better serve students and prepare them to become innovators and major contributors to the betterment of the world.”

The U.S. News ranking is just the latest among a number of recent indicators suggesting Olin has become recognized as a leading institution nationally and globally.

An MIT study released in the spring named Olin, along with MIT, as the top leaders globally in engineering education, even as more and more top programs are acknowledging Olin’s influence in their curricular reforms. The Princeton Review recently named Olin a top college in the nation in the 2019 edition of its college guide, The Best 384 colleges, recognizing Olin for the high quality of its faculty and classroom experience. And Business Insider recently placed Olin #3 among the “50 Smartest Colleges in America,” sharing top rankings with such institutions as CalTech, MIT, Yale and Harvard.

“We set out to become recognized as the leader in the transformation of engineering education, and there is evidence in these recent rankings and other forms of recognition that we have reached an important milestone toward that goal,” said Miller.

The U.S. News rankings of undergraduate engineering programs are based on the judgments of deans and senior faculty at peer institutions. U.S. News surveyed engineering school deans and faculty members in spring 2018 and asked them to rate each program they were familiar with on a scale from 1 (marginal) to 5 (distinguished) for these rankings. U.S. News has separate rankings for undergraduate engineering programs at colleges that offer doctoral degrees in engineering.
