The U.S. is witnessing unprecedented numbers of women engaging in electoral politics in general, and running for office in particular.

"The women who may arrive in the next Congress will have an uphill battle, and if an impact of their election is to be felt, their supporters and colleagues will need to continue the hard work of getting issues on the agenda and working to re-elect diverse candidates," says Catherine Bolzendahl, associate professor of sociology at the University of California, Irvine.

She is a political sociologist focusing primarily on gender from a cross-national perspective, contributing to a deeper understanding of political change cross-nationally and over time, as well as the meaning of family and gender in the politcal culture in the U.S. and among Western industrialized democracies.
