PARK RIDGE, Illinois – Anesthesia providers can learn the essentials of running a successful anesthesia practice from Juan Quintana, DNP, MHS, CRNA, and Larry Hornsby, BSN, CRNA, owners of International Anesthesia Seminars (IAS). This partnership between IAS and the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) has resulted in an eight-week online course that covers a broad range of topics, from contract negotiations to reimbursement processes.  The first cohort was held in July 2018 and the second session began this month.

Quintana will speak on related topics at the AANA Practice Leadership Assembly (PLA), November 9-11, 2018 in Rosemont, Ill. His presentations will include “Anesthesia Business Models: Moving the Market and Knowing Your Value,” and a panel discussion titled, “The Business Savvy CRNA: The Journey to Entrepreneurial Success.” For more information about the PLA, visit https://www.aana.com/docs/default-source/meeting/2018-pla-schedule-a-glance.pdf?sfvrsn=74fe58b1_26

Both Quintana and Hornsby are former AANA presidents who have successfully founded and managed multi-million-dollar anesthesia group businesses.  The eight-week online seminar equips Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) who are new to the business world with the necessary information to become savvy owners capable of navigating the ever-changing healthcare landscape.

“This is the first-time an extensive course on the business of anesthesia has ever been offered,” said CRNA businessmen Quintana and Hornsby.  “CRNAs will receive university-level instruction pertaining to the nuts and bolts of starting an anesthesia business, pitfalls to avoid, and billing best practices from anesthesia colleagues who have seen it all. Our colleagues have asked for an educational opportunity such as this for quite some time, and now it’s available.” added Hornsby and Quintana.

Future cohorts are scheduled to begin on the following dates:

  • January 7, 2019
  • April 1, 2019

The course is being offered through AANA’s online education platform, AANALearn®. The average cost for online college-level courses is $300-$400 dollars per hour. This seminar is offered to AANA members for just $75 per hour. Participants will earn 16 CE credits and leave the course with an actionable business plan and a certificate of completion from the AANA.
