Newswise — Mark Wade, M.D., has been named the 2019 Senator Frank R. Lautenberg Awardee by the Rutgers School of Public Health. He will also provide the “Public Health Lecture” at the School’s Convocation Ceremony.
The Lautenberg Award was established by Rutgers School of Public Health in 2001 to honor those who have made outstanding contributions in public health. Dr. Wade’s passion and commitment to the discipline is evidenced by the work he has and continues to undertake as the Director of the Newark Department of Health and Community Wellness.
Dr. Wade oversees the Department’s Bioterrorism, Emergency Preparedness, Disease Monitoring and Prevention, Health Education, Immunization Services, Homeless Services and a host of other programs, including a full array of primary healthcare services including pediatric, adult, dental, HIV and infectious disease, podiatric and case management services for Newark residents, especially for Medicaid, uninsured and homeless populations. Dr. Wade is also involved with the pursuit of solutions to address the violence and opioid issues of the City. For more than 30 years, Dr. Wade has mentored countless students, adults, athletes and peers from all walks of life through the "challenges of life", both personal and professionals, and is frequently sought after to be a stabilizing and maturing voice and role model for those in need.
Dr. Wade is a board-certified pediatrician with subspecialty training and expertise in adolescent medicine. He completed undergraduate training at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute of Technology in Troy, NY, receiving his B.S. in Biology in 1975, and attended medical school at the University of Florida in Gainesville and received his M.D. degree in 1980. Dr. Wade completed his pediatric internship training at Howard University Hospital and his residency in pediatrics at Montefiore Hospital in the Bronx, NY in 1983. His subspecialty training in adolescent medicine was completed at St. Lukes-Roosevelt Hospital in New York City in 1988. Dr. Wade is a noted expert nationally and internationally for his work in pediatrics, prison healthcare, HIV/AIDS and medical missions work.

Dr. Wade’s work with the populations of Newark, which marries public health with medicine and social justice, is perfectly aligned with our School’s ethos of ‘keeping the public in public health.’ Since my arrival at the School, Dr. Wade has been a trusted colleague and advisor working with us in many capacities, including serving on our Community Service Committee.”
Dr. Wade is an ordained minister and is also a member of the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees of the National Medical Association (NMA).
Dr. Wade will receive the Senator Frank R. Lautenberg Award and deliver his address on Friday, May 17, 2019, at 5:00 p.m. at Rutgers Nicholas Music Center in New Brunswick, New Jersey.
