Newswise — New York, NY, February 11, 2019—The Department of Rehabilitation and Human Performance at the Mount Sinai Health System has become the official medical services provider on the East Coast for U.S. Red Bull athletes and Red Bull’s athlete performance programs. Mount Sinai joins DISC Sports and Spine Center in Newport Beach, California, the official medical provider for Red Bull on the West Coast. Together, Mount Sinai and DISC will work side by side to help provide more than 200 Red Bull athletes across five different sports categories—action, adventure, aerial, athletic, and motorsports—with the most cutting-edge and innovative medical care and sports performance programming available in the nation.
“This very exciting partnership enables Red Bull athletes to have access to Mount Sinai’s leading sports medicine specialists within the Department of Rehabilitation and Human Performance, ensuring premium care and quicker recoveries,” said Joseph E. Herrera, DO, Chair of Rehabilitation and Human Performance for the Mount Sinai Health System. “As a result of this synergistic relationship, Mount Sinai specialists will have the chance to work closely with DISC to provide top notch coordinated care across the country to Red Bull athletes.”
“Red Bull has been a long-time leader in the study of human performance,” said David Putrino, PhD, Director of Innovation for the Mount Sinai Health System and an Assistant Professor of Rehabilitation and Human Performance at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, who has a longstanding relationship as a consultant with Red Bull High Performance. “This is an incredible opportunity for Mount Sinai to partner with an organization that has a globally recognized reputation for exploring the limits of human performance with their athletes. Together we will develop elite performance models that will achieve outstanding results.”
According to Dr. Putrino, the new partnership extends far beyond conventional sports medicine, which has traditionally focused on helping patients improve their athletic performance while also preventing and recovering from injury. It will also create an active research program at Mount Sinai to investigate and analyze human sports performance and endurance in a lab setting. Additionally, the Department of Rehabilitation and Human Performance may also provide medical staff for coverage at events in which Red Bull athletes are competing.
The Mount Sinai Health System is already the official medical services provider for the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Eastern Section and the US Open. The system’s partnership with the USTA also includes the US Women’s Fed Cup team and the US Men’s Davis Cup team.
