Background:

Dan Arbell, scholar-in-residence in the Dept. of History, is a 25-year veteran of the Israeli Foreign Service, serving in senior posts overseas in the United Nations, the United States and Japan, and holding senior positions at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Headquarters in Jerusalem. “The elections have become a referendum on Netanyahu's continued rule," Arbell says. Arbell can discuss parties in the race, candidates, platforms and agendas, implications of the elections on U.S.-Israel relations, regional dynamics and the peace process.

Guy Ziv, assistant professor in the School of International Service, is an expert on U.S. foreign policy toward the Middle East, U.S.-Israel relations, and Israeli-Palestinian peacemaking. He is the author of Why Hawks Become Doves: Shimon Peres and Foreign Policy Change in Israel. His opinion articles have appeared in leading American and Israeli newspapers, including The Baltimore Sun, CNN.com, Haaretz, The Jerusalem Post, and USA Today. He frequently appears as a commentator in major media outlets, such as Al Jazeera, BBC, CNN, and Sky News. Ziv can address a wide range of topics, including the following issues: U.S. foreign policy toward Israel; the significance and implications of the April 9 elections in Israel, the prospects of renewing Israeli-Palestinian peacemaking, among other topics.

Ziv says: “The parallels between the political situation in Israel and in the U.S. are striking: populist nationalism; attacks on the media, the courts, and other gatekeepers of democracy; and clouds of corruption surrounding both Netanyahu and Trump, whose governments are under months-long investigations.”
