After Notre Dame fire, what can be salvaged and restored?

After a large fire did extensive damage to Notre Dame cathedral in Paris, attention has now turned to what can be done to restore the historic monument. Dominick Pilla, lecturer at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in both architecture and engineering, has been watching the developments of the fire with an eye to what can and likely will be salvaged and refurbished. Pilla has extensive experience in both private practice and academia as an engineer and architect. He is very familiar with evaluating historic structures for re-use. While the wooden timbers and framing that burned cannot be replaced with similar material, Pilla does expect much of the masonry and other components will be salvaged. He can describe the evaluation and inspection process experts face at this time, and what they will be considering as they look to restore the building back to the international landmark that it was.
