The loss of electrical power during and after hurricanes is of significant concern right now as Hurricane Dorian bears down on the Southeast. Luigi Vanfretti, an associate professor of electrical, computer, and systems engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, is an expert who can talk about the electrical grid and what challenges providers and governments face in restoring the power. He can also speak about the importance of creating resiliency in electrical power infrastructure so power outages are less frequent and last for a shorter period of time, which is the focus of research in his ALSETLab at Rensselaer.
